What do you think would help grow RenX community ?

e.g. Islands - GDI has field control for... a long time. 75% of GDI is Elite, some Heroics.

GDI base get's constantly solo or squad nuked by SBH.

then a solo SBH nuker got lucky n hits the GDI barracks.

all it takes is one player to change a map ;):P

....but it's not just that single SBH who changed the map, but the whole whole enemy team who didn't care (enough) about a solo nuke.

PS: same story possible with sneakers :D

Well, then you can remove any element from the game to make it easier... I dont like overminers (spent 10 minutes remining yesterday on Under only to lose one the PP at minute ten and then the entire base) but lately I see less issues with mines.

Guest once upon the time

I remember when I started (think was Beta 2) the expierenced ppl was helping much more the new players.

I made on TMX the same mistake with mining like ppl today, but Veterans explains me what could be a better mining. Ok, I was willing to learn too, that must be a basic too. :)

We had on EKT a lot o ppl who mines somewhere on the map (minelimt was a little bit to high :) ) , but i was not really angry about it, because they was new and I made mistakes at the begining too.

Other was explaining me like some veterans are playing  and where i must look for. So a lot gave a real good start up for a new player.

That why i stayed in this game.

Ok Beta 5 i only play very selden and i can not say if "Veterans " try to support new players or if they only wanna win.

This few time i played i saw more blaiming than helping, Noob was falling very often to totaly new players.

Well...

I know it all depends on my mood, how much I worked and other circumstances @Axesor cause I can be annoyed about overmining, but...

- Mines have a certain amount of (un)luck involved with the placing. Someone can overmine, place wrong
- Someone can mine to defend C4 on enemy MCT (and expose an own building)
- Etc

Mines can decide a game in both win and loss. But if you remove this element it makes the game more 'scripted' and less 'a game.'

In my opinion a good commander can make a big difference. He / she can remove all non-building mines and correct a problem if the person reacts to teamchat.

But even with that I often see  is (sadly) people who 'suggest' themselve as commander in order to never react to teamchat cause they are 'too busy commanding' (not sure what they do...)

A commander also brings in some amount of 'randomness.'

If we remove ALL the randomness there would be no game, but just a script with which player has to move how....

I understand what you say, cause losing cause of 'new players' or people not self-aware is sad, but I rather invest on adding extra options to the game:
- tutorial
- information (like you are overmining message on FPI server)
- Players helping out (I even played on empty servers to learn people stuff)
- Motivate people to chat, even though they don't know English (I often hear I dont understand English, then how did you install the game...)
- commander options

Instead of askingsk people to spend time strip the game, cause soon there will be no game left... Tanks can be stolen cause noobs get out... Disallow people to steal tanks,.. Crates? Disabled them, might influence the game. Spies? No way! Etc....

Hope you understand. Like I always say: "I rather lose a good fight in game, then win by the enemy teams f*ckups..."

Do you know what you're doing?

All jokes aside, I would love to create actual HUD elements that would contain useful information. This of course could be toggle-able, but would be on by default. A lot of other games use helpful tip features that can be disabled. I think this would overall increase player retention (as people wouldn't be as ostracized and would at least partly know what to do) and reduce in-game toxicity. I was also thinking it may serve the community to place a tutorial button on the main screen, which would open your browser to a tutorial video, but it's something I've never discussed with anyone before.

I recently made some changes with the old AGN mutator, adding a new weapon type called the Assault Proximity C4.

This should hopefully be helpful with these sort of issues, the kinks haven't been worked out yet, but they are almost ready. Me and Sho are trying to make them the ideal infiltrator weapon, without reducing the mine limit from the team.

We added it to the Demolition Expert class, but if they work well enough, may make them a purchasable weapon.

Demolition Expert is a new class to replace the McFarland class, giving him access to a vast array of explosives to help destroy enemy buildings and vehicles.

He has the following:

Modified Flak Cannon

Frag Grenades

Smoke Grenades

Recharging EMP grenade (Weapon Ability)

Assault Proxy Mines

No Timed C4 (Or at least meant to have no Timed... He kept getting some for some random reason, ill test later)

Maybe other things, but cant remember. May tone down the class a little once I solve a few issues.

That's what I meant. Sometimes I make a judgement call to overmine. Fairly points out it's not wrong what you do, but makes you think (if you have that capability :P ) what it would do for other mines.

I'm forgetting if this was mentioned already ...

but basically, it seems like there is a bit of a catch 22 going on here.

We want to grow the game community and its presence, but Devs are looking to have the game be less Beta-ish first. ...but to speed that along more people working on the game would be necessary. But since not many know about it, few people who have the skills are able to work on the game.

So my suggestion is we should look to recruit even more developers? (I think Havoc89 put out a call for this like a year back, not sure what came of it).

Well you are to blame for that loss as well. It was me defending the tunnels with Bioz and you as the commander remove the mines, the only thing holding em back from the pp. Bioz quit the game when that happened as well.

On that note Renx is quite a complicated game and explaining anything other than the basics to new people is quite hard. Mine banning is all fine but half the time the damage is done. From irc its hard to know what overmining is legit and whats not.

Example one of my guys Jason was repp'n the wf roof while we are screaming over the mic to rep the MCT. turns out we didnt explain what the MCT was to start with.

Some sorta basic tutorial would go along way to get the newbies up to speed. I dont mind helping with that how i can.

well i was more thinking of something interactive and that is out of date. Talks about side arms etc.

Players need to be informed about over mining etc

I admit thou i didn't know about that video, is it offered to all new players? maybe it should play when you install the game instead of the picture that shows? If you have to wait 10mins+ for the game to install might as well have that video there.

You didn't mention that buildings didnt have mines and a spy could infiltrate. I was simply fixing mines and for that I removed the tunnel mines. I couldnt expect a rush at exact that moment of time.

Just listening to people that stop to play would be the best of course.

Last few days I asked my friend (who I insisted him on trying this game but he stopped playing) why he stopped playing. The reasons he gave was already mentioned in here:

  •  Very toxic community (I don't think this is the big problem for him since he plays games with equally toxic community like CSGO and R6S. But still a contributing factor).
  • Game is very boring, I didn't understand at first what he meant but he explained it's because the unlimited timed games. I think it's because he plays 2 hours doing no progress and the game changer activities takes only 10 minutes to achieve destroying some buildings. He rather finished that match via time expiry where people will play seriously immediately after map change instead of waiting for people to start acting after 2 hours where most had already left the game.
  • He thinks it is stupid other people are controlling how he should be using his own Proximity C4 - kinda disagree with him on this since mines are team-shared but I feel him, the game is forcing everyone to be using mines defensively (since it is the best place) when the possibility and creativity of using mines can do much more.
  • He dislike how the price of characters contribute more than skills and he keeps getting killed by better characters -  He sees the free characters barely do any damage to a mendoza (well it's based on RTS so I tried explaining this to him and how mendoza are anti infantry specialist). He plays other FPS games where the starting weapon can easily kill someone with the most expensive gun (btw, pls buff shotguns). He didn't mention this but I would like to add that team-stackers may also contribute him leaving the game since I suspect he gets killed by them a lot.
  • (in his own words) The game is a radio-spam simulator.

As for me, I stopped playing for almost 2 months mainly because I had trouble reinstalling and downloading it. It's just a small problem but the factors listed above makes me trying harder to reinstall it less encouraging.

Actually, it only shows in green in the top left on everyone's screen. The red lettering that Sarah shows on the post a few above mine, is only shown to the player over-mining.

Interesting. As someone like myself who's been playing "C&C mode", Renegade/Renegade X for nearly 15  years off and on, I could see where a new player might make these points. However, as a counter-argument to "its boring", I'd say people need to be reminded this game should be seen as a STRATEGY game first, a TEAM game second and a SHOOTER last.

Frankly, I don't even like strickly FPS games, because I find them too repetitive and pointless. all you do is run around and shoot the other person before they shoot you. There is no other real goal than that.

If anything, I think there should be more emphasis on the fact that the game is an RTS-FPS Hybrid. (maybe as a sub-title even). The name "Renegade-X", sadly is being forgotten to time.

I haven't played in almost 3 months because:

  1. No in-game voice talk.
  2. Fortnite has in-game voice talk.
  3. 75% of my friends and family play fortnite.... I don't mean 75% of my gamer friends and gamer family. I literally mean 75% of my friends and family play at least at a casual level. It's at the point where I just talk to people in-game to catch up rather than calling them.

Hello everyone. I'm a super veteran of the JellyServer from original C&C Renegade. Used to be an admin there, and in NightServ Sniping server.
I just remembered after several years that this exists, and I look forward to playing it, and getting some older vets of C&C Renegade to play with me.

Look forward to seeing everyone in-game.
Hope Hourglass marathon exists in this ;)

ADD THE RECON BIKE, that'll definitely help the community grow... ;D

Also, the GDI EVA voice is really, really, really annoying. The way she says "Gee, Dee, AYE," instead of just "GDI" is the kicker that makes me want to punch the bitch out. And she says that a lot. The devs should get the chick to rerecord all her lines with a much smoother sharper quicker to the point emphasis on her enunciation, her wording. Or just use the original Renegade EVA voice.

Oh and another thing. Your website is not showing up on google. The first result is your wikipedia page. I couldn't find your website, until I went to Mod DB and scrolled down to the statistics.

@roweboat  Good to know. But all the points sounds more like personal taste I think, still good to know.

It is also that not every match is as fun as another wich makes it difficult to love this game. I love it because I know it and also played the original. But a new player you can only get hooked if the first matches are one of the fun ones.

Like mentioned you should give the frontpage a short description about Renegade-x including the name and important words on which you want to be found.

I don't know how IPB / the forum works, but there should also be a meta description for Google containing 155 characters max with the most important details.

Fuhrter:
- You could add titles with important words Like 'Free to play' or whatever you like the game to be found on  (H1 or H2) on the frontpage leading to pages which more information
- Alternatively you could make landing pages with import words or phrases
- A lot of people search on images. You could give the frontpage pictures a more descriptive name to gain more traffic
- The site lacks a sitemap, can help for getting indexed by Google
- The site also lacks a robots.txt
- Redirecting broken links can also help

Also:

Check the .htaccess if it doesn't block indexing

For some reason the site has ONE 301 redirect which sends bentos profile to that from poi :P

Well I guess it does explain a bit...

I can't go back to see the history of the website, so I cannot compare, but recent changes (past year) have made the frontpage unindexable.

You can check how google sees your site by using:
info:renegade-x.com

Result = nothing

Google doesn't index the frontpage of Renegade-x at all. Check another url and it works. Same goes for Bing, doesn't index the site either.

Cronus and I are already aware of the indexing issues. These issues are entirely unrelated to SEO; they're the result of pages being marked 'noindex' unexpectedly and Google taking a very long time to reindex the site to verify the issue resolved. It's a painfully slow issue to resolve.

Or you can add the site to Google Webmaster tools below and crawl some pages as google and manually request indexing. Happens the same day.

Last week I cleared a site from SERP viagra spam like this. Pages got reindexed in 24 hours.

To balance out the Demolitions Expert (if any such is attempted) I'd recommend to make the class more slow, as well as having no Timed whatsoever and 3 Remote C4s so it wouldn't be able to destroy a building easily (Could still heavily damage a building achieving perma damage with 3 Remote C4 on top of its current arsenal, by shooting at the MCT giving the opposing team some more time to save the building if anyone is actually in the base. This is pretty accurate. I feel that the problem is this game is that once any side starts to lose everyone just quits.

There is no point to play a game where you have lost a building in the first 2 mins of the game.

There is no penalty for cheating. It does not matter if you eventually ban the person for aimbotting or editing their game to increase their chances to hit a target. The damage is already done and asking people not to talk about it is fucking stupid!!!( that's like going to the doctor and telling him your leg hurts when you walk on it and he tells you not to walk on it then...)

The lag in the game is unplayable. If you are not within 100 miles of the server your lag makes the game look like everyone else is cheating. You can empty entire clips into people standing still and do no damage.

Wrong on so many levels. If anyone is actually aimbotting in this game, there is only MAYBE like 2 of them. Asking people not to complain about hackers in game is like telling a child not to cry to everyone that their leg hurts. Telling the doctor would be like telling a moderator/admin, like you're supposed to do. That specific rule is in place to reduce toxicity in-game. I have been accused of aimbot many times, and I am not even that good at the game. It's funny the first 100 times, then it just gets annoying. One person bitching leads to more, and it just degenerates into shitty name calling and people being dumb. There's a time and place, and that is in PMs with a moderator or on this forum. And if you have a problem with a specific server's rules, try talking to their staff.

What kind of ping do you get? I live a continent away (over 5000 miles) and the game looks fine to me. I usually get 140-160 ping to FairPlay.

Not to attack you or anything, but I'm going to have to disagree on that point alone. I live in Japan and play fine with a 300-400ms ping. I get more no-registers in Fortnite than RenX. You might have legitimate packet loss.

Server FPS comes before all else. If the server's performance is not at full, then the game will look like that. The game could look laggy, but your ping is fine. This upcoming patch includes plenty of performance fixes that should at least partially relieve these issues. (The game should be limited to 40 players, it's not designed with that many or higher players in mind.)

I agree that awareness is one of the biggest issues. Paying large youtubers / streamers to do promotion may work or it may not. I for one ignore most ads and favour smaller, more humble creators that aren't as cheesy or moronic, and don't put a ton of sponsored crap in their content.

There are a whole bunch of companies out there paying prominent youtubers / streamers to promote their products. Energy drinks, peripherals, dodgy skin gambling websites, you name it. Some game developers even pay people to play their games. Ark Survival Evolved for example was recently caught offering to pay people to stream their game. They copped a lot of flak from the community for it, including some youtubers. Paying people comes off as a desperate move and doesn't really convey the spirit of Renegade X and how it came into existence as a not for profit.

Maybe reach out to some smaller youtubers and simply say to them that Renegade X is a 100% free game so you can't pay them, but you really want them to take a look at the game because you really think they'll like it, since profit has never been your focus. There will be content creators out there that are just as sick of the big money companies like EA as everyone here is, and will likely do a video for nothing if something really grabs their attention. And this game should do that in most people's account.

I'm really glad to see so many old Renegade players here but this game is so much more than just a remake. It is something I think a lot of gamers will find refreshingly enjoyable. As long as they don't get locked in a stalemate on a marathon server...
