First, I’d like to congratulate Totem Arts and the Renegade X community on its 5th anniversary! It’s been five years since we originally announced Renegade X as an Unreal Tournament 3 mod. Since then, we’ve released five multiplayer betas on UT3, and in the past year and a half, we’ve been working on the standalone version of Renegade X. We hope the coming year is as kind to us as our previous years!

And what better day to release our singleplayer campaign - Renegade X: Operation Black Dawn.

Renegade X is an indie standalone game, bringing the world of Command & Conquer to ground level. Renegade X is a tactical First Person Shooter with RTS elements, featuring two unique factions, each with distinctive weapons and vehicles. With stunning visuals and remarkable gameplay, Renegade X aims to push the Unreal Engine 3 to its climax.

OPERATION: BLACK DAWN

Renegade X is both a singleplayer and multiplayer game. On January 28th 2012, Totem Arts released “Renegade X: Black Dawn”. Black Dawn is a free, standalone, short 1-2 hour singleplayer game we have been preparing for quite some time now. Although most of Renegade X’s aspirations are in the multiplayer realm, in mid-2010, we decided that a short campaign would precede our upcoming standalone multiplayer beta.

Black Dawn is a demonstration of what is to come in the future. The release date of the final multiplayer version is still to be announced, and hence, we thought it would be good for you to have something to play while you wait. This demonstration is complete with a short 10-part campaign, custom cinematics and fantastic gameplay. It will be an opportunity for you to get used to all the weapons, vehicles, characters, and changes before the upcoming multiplayer release.

STORY

Operation Black Dawn takes place on a small island in the Black Sea. The island has been turn into a fortress belonging to the Brotherhood of Nod, an international terrorist organization.

Satellite images show that the island is heavily defended: automated turrets lie on all shores, and troop patrols roam the island day and night. Although it is unclear if Nod forces have access to sophisticated anti-aircraft batteries, there are large forests stretching across the island which obstruct the view of satellites.

On a recent trip to the Tiber River in Italy, Tiberium research specialist Dr. Ignatio Mobius and his daughter Sydney Mobius were captured by Nod's Black Hand elite team.

The UN's Global Defense Initiative, an international military force committed to world order and peacekeeping, has been authorized to conduct a secret naval operation. GDI intelligence has confirmed that the Black Hand smuggled the scientists and other prisoners of war onto a ship to Albania, where they were then flown via C-130 to this Nod island stronghold. Since Dr. Mobius is GDI's leading scientist in the field of Tiberium, he is a valuable asset and must be safely returned before the contagious spread of Tiberium further harms the world population and environment.

Hence, the objective of "Operation Black Dawn" is to destroy the Nod base and recover the scientists. Two GDI battalions have been dispatched to deploy on the southern and eastern shores of the island. The battalion to the east is to distract Nod forces, while a commando team attacks the southern beachhead, flanks the enemy and infiltrates the Nod base with air and ground support

I'd like to add that the torrent (demonoid) is highly recommend and will be seeded for 5Gbit from my side alone and it will both be faster for you as well as everyone else to use that over the HTTP links (or any HTTP link elsewhere).

Congratulations on this great milestone! My crappy copper line won't be transmitting much other things besides Black Dawn for a while, let's spread it like wildfire :D

Unfortunately the web server doesn't cope very well with the load, the forum is barely reachable :P

Uggg, torrents are so slow..... Why do people always praise them for being more efficient? I could have had at least 40% downloaded by now. Torrent is only at 1.6%.. and it has been 10 minutes...

Uh, they ARE more efficient. For every HTTP file that completes the HTTP protocol requires the full 4GB, for torrents we can expect at least 30% to be seeded by others. Just FYI, tonight so far looked like this:

And that's full 1gbit of bandwidth non-stop, something that even now costs a shit load to fund. Multiply this graph by 5 times (5x 1gbit servers) and the fact that I can't even connect to them by SSH: Yeah, quite expensive.

i mean ABSOLUTELY

boring, bugged, with stupid enemies, idiotic dialogs , long pointless cutscenes and shitty gameplay...

yea graphics looks nice but it's all...

dropped after 15 minutes of playing no, i can't call it "playing"

this is not what i expected to see from the game that takes 5gb of hard drive >_>

yea graphics looks nice but it's all...

You should rethink your attitude, the game is a free product, no one forced you to play it. Btw. the game is amazing!

Ps. seems to me, not only the enemies are stupid. *looks in front of UnShame's pc*

because if you did, you probably wouldn't think that this game is amazing =)

i believe that MULTIPLAYER of this game can be good but now i just see that AI is amazing stupid

and btw, why enemy vehicles can't kill me? they're shooting but it has no impact on me...

You have to remember that this team specializes in multiplayer, so with certain singleplayer tasks such as AI, we're... limited. So yeah Black Dawn does have some short comings no doubt, but its still fun to play with. Multiplayer however will be, everything that renegade was but better and much more.

The AI is crappy, I suppose everyone will agree with that. For me, the game is awesome not because of the state of the art artificial intelligence but because of the high quality maps and environments, the stunning atmosphere, the cool cutscenes and special effects, the great weapons and vehicles, and the fact that despite the AI the game is still pretty challenging. I've certainly enjoyed playing through the mini-campaign and the best thing is, every element I've just mentioned that doesn't concern AI will be carried over to the upcoming multiplayer release.

Mcfarmland's awsome golf skills :D .I literrally love that cutscene.And about the AI, no they aren't that stupid for me it was harder to kill them than the ones in renegade.You did a great job with the game and thank you for spending your freetime for working on it.You really brought back the good times of Renegade.

Oh ok :) i thought it is finished ^^ in April i will have a LAN-Party, i hope the MP is finished then :D

Don't count on it, Black Dawn 'only' supplied the props for the game, including characters and tanks. Now they are in front of the daunting task of creating large, balanced maps that will be playable with any number of players.

The fact that the AI isn't very good does bring up a point: if they aren't smart in the single player, where all they have to do is engage the player and HIS AI, then how is it supposed to be better in the multiplayer when the AI is filling in for missing players? I hope that the AI will be updated before that, so that it is not only capable of doing tasks like buying tanks and upgrading it's character, but also capable of defending itself.

From my point of view it's almost impossible to create an AI capable of all the tasks in renegade, all UT games had an AI capable of handling all the weapons and avoiding gunfire, which was it's only task but took hundreds of hours of the developers time. Imagine a game where the AI has to keep track of bullet travel, distance and speed of enemies, incoming fire, it's own speed and movement, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Add in the economy system and the capability to select the right type of character or tank for the job (so he doesn't buy a sniper when a flame rush is incomming).

Actually, I could provide some of the physics calculations for the bullet travel and speed etc, I have to do that in college anyways. But I have no idea how those are normally used in the game.

so the AI is realistic, like every shot hits on multiplayer, they have just noob AI, like you have noob players in multiplayer. But have you tried all difficult modes?

Awesome game, this is abesolutely well worth the wait. Although everything took place on a single island, I just felt satisfied after completing the game. The storyline and the atmosphere are very well designed. The cutscenes were simply beautiful and amazing. Good job guys, as much as I want the multiplayer release, you guys deserve some break.

One problem that I did notice was that the mission after the mammoth capture the eastern beach (Mission 7 or 8, not really sure which one), the game always crash on me after loading. I had to relaunch the game and select the next mission. Not sure if it's only happening to me. Hopefully a future patch or something can fix that.

Also, for some reason I can't adjust volume for the game in the option menu so I had to turn everything up, not a really big problem though.

Finally, LCACs coming out of gunboats are just kind of odd... that would make the gunboats at least as big as battleships. In the original Renegade/C&C, LCAC come out of LHDs which is almost as big as some smaller aircraft carriers. Orcas and Chinooks are also launched from the same ship, while smaller gunboats provides escort. The two guns at the rear of the gunboats were suppose to be 50 cals, now they look like a pair of 5 in. canons...xD Just a little nitpicking...

I didn't even see that post.

I agree, download speeds are atrocious. Espicially on sites that normallygo top speed.

My top speed iis 160 KB/S. The top speed for the HTML downloads that I canceled were 1 KB/s

Guys, really, you don't need to complain about the AI so much.I know the team would love to have an advanced AI, but they would have to hire people for that, and that, as you know, doesn't come free. I'll try to post a quote if I find it. Because I know they said the same elsewhere.

I dare say that we did managed to come close to the original Campaign AI for Renegade ha!

All criticism is warranted guys, but that particular poster, saying that everything downright sucks is plain trolling.

I can say with all honesty that we've learned much from this project and we had a blast making it and hope that shows through in the final product.

Multiplayer will be even more badass (+ It's multiplayer!)
