One of the great things about Renegade X is that the development team has an agreement with EA allowing them to develop Renegade X. So Renegade X (and Firestorm) are being developed with EA's permission. So I believe there is not nearly as big a chance of the game being shut down as you may have (legitimately, not knowing of the agreement) worried.

I'm pretty sure any raising of funds from the public would be in violation of the agreement with EA, whether or not Totem Arts was set up as a non-profit.
