Why don't you let him unwrap one of your vehicles and use the extra time you earn with that building a new structure? If he's good enough for your standards you could let him work on all your vehicles, with credit given where it's due off course

How do we increase our current community size?
XD_ERROR_XD replied to XD_ERROR_XD's topic in Renegade X
I remember there were talks about an Assault game mode a loooong time ago. I wonder what would've happened sith that. But what i would love to see is co-op... ermagerd sooo good But i guess it's a bit much work to create. What would actually be needed to create a bare-bones co-op map, just as a proof of concept? A good thing about a decent co-op map is that it's possible to complete with a lower playercount. P.S. Is that bird yours? I like your avatar -

Only the funding part is true, they are not allowed to earn any money through the game, but i think the amount of trailers on youtube kind of proves otherwise regarding the promotion/advertising part. But even with the money part, this problem could be circumvented by making everything unofficial and by the community itself. They could get approval by the devs, but I don't really see this happen soon. -
How do we increase our current community size?
XD_ERROR_XD replied to XD_ERROR_XD's topic in Renegade X
Well, at this point, the problem kind of also is attracting new people. My opinion is that snipers could use a change in some situations, However i don't know how i would change them but honestly this isn't what we should be worrying about right now. What i'm worrying about right now is how many patches will remain until the full release AKA version 1.0. This version '1.0' will be one of our trump cards in drawing new players in and i don't know how strict the developers are with ironing out all the bugs before this release. I don't like to say it but to new players that never heard of Renegade X before, small but annoying bugs will make a far greater impact than on seasoned players that learned to live with them. We simply can't risk wasting that chance right now, but that doesn't mean we can't come up with our own way of recruiting players. -
How do we increase our current community size?

I'm not really of the opinion that current balance issues would be a big factor when it comes to people leaving the game. A lot has been done about it already, 6 months ago i may have agreed with you but not now. And about your average Time To Kill (if that's what you meant)... If you took the sniper and put it against a unit with a similar cost in a 1v1, the sniper wouldn't be at an advantage at all. The problem with being a sniper when both you and the enemy is skilled, for every shot you miss, the enemy could have taken a lot of hitpoints or more away, putting his damage per second far above yours. If you hit, yours would definitely be above his but with the relatively long time between shots, he could still keep up pretty nicely. The balance issue here is unit placement, the sniper is effective in too many locations and efforts to rebalance this has led to major discussion, with most of the feedback being negative. But there's more needed than just balance changes to keep the playerbase active. Something that allows them to communicate outside the game more easily, a Steam release would work perfect here but nobody knows if this will ever happen. *secretly crosses fingers* -
EDIT: Thanks for all the replies guys! Here's a current list of suggestions: --------------------------------------- Hey guys! First of all i would like to thank anyone that bothered to click on this forum thread and giving it a read. I was inspired to make this thread after reading about the release of the newest patch. It made me think about how much of our current playerbase actually go to this forum, seen it, read it and therefore would not be surprised when the launcher would say 'new update available'. How do you keep people notified that don't or no longer go the forums and do you draw them (back) here? Thinking about this, i thought about Jelly-games' end games in the original game and how they used their e-mailing system to notify people about this event. Many oldschoolers that left the forum returned once more to participate in this big event, leaving the admins shocked about how well this worked. Do we notify the people that registered here whenever a major update gets released, like the SDK and the 3 new maps that are being added to the game? I definitely think a lot of former members that left due to crashes or the lack of consistent updates that have forgotten about this game could return. All they need it a reason to give it another chance, and i think there's a lot of them currently. But there is something that is just as important as drawing players. How do you make sure they stick around? A new initiative needs to be formed, or the current one needs to be improved. A Steam community group could be created which allows people to communicate with others without the need to create a seperate topic. But what about this forum? To me, this forum is like a home, but there's not much to talk about lately. Most of the new threads here lately are about game updates and projects, which are great but it's hard to actively participate in these threads without the proper knowledge. What we lack are topics that people can hop into just for fun, but these require a larger playerbase to maintain, like screenshot threads, funny in-game quote threads, one-line-at-a-time-story threads, etc. But how are we supposed to draw new people to this game? I'm not sure, but i do have some ideas that might work. One of them i will explain now: There are many Youtube channels out there that are completely community driven regarding their content. Let's just say that we hold a contest. And let's say, in order to participate, you must upload a video of yourself in Renegade-X where something funny or really epic happens. You must give the rights of the video however to blah blah, and the winner wins the prize of let's say, infinite wisdom . We could send the best videos to those youtubers in the hope to be featured in their channel, which would be great advertising. In the meantime, we have given the current community to actively participate in an event and have generated a lot of new footage to watch on youtube, expanding our reach in the huge establishment that is youtube. So... if you made it this far, I would like to say a big thank you! But what do you think of this? What is your opinion on the current community, suggestions given and how do you think we can get to expand our community? Do you have any suggestions on your own? Do you think the current playerbase should and/or can come together and work on a big campaign to reach to new players? Do you think money can and/or should be involved? I'd love to hear your response about this!

Wow.. first time i've seen this happen. Did he lose any health?
-
Nice texture... But where's the big blue horizontal stripe on the tank? ^^
-
Whoops! I'm sorry, I didn't read through your post properly and the images didn't load for me due to slow internet. I automatically assumed you talked about the pillbox you tried to texture a while ago, my bad! But yes, my camouflaging argument still stands.

I don't know how much health buildings have in Renegade X. I know they have 500 in C&C Renegade though. If remotes take off 20% of a building's health when they blew up on a MCT, that means buildings in Renegade X have 1000 health if the multiplier is 1, 2000 if the multiplier is 2, and 500 if the multiplier is 0,5. Light armour is given to MRLS, Arties, Humvees and buggies. The current aircraft will be given their own armour class in patch 5.003 so they will have a diffrent damage scale. If you aleady knew this but need exact numbers, I can't give those to you, I don't know what they are. I know SFJake made his own damage chart, but that's from beta 3 and things have changed since then. If you want to take a look, find any of his posts and click on the link in his signature.

Sweeeet!

I guess you already know this, but... The reason why the pillbox is blue is because the allies' colour is blue, and therefore the pillbox has that colour. I'd say keep it blue as the pillbox is not really supposed to be stealthy and you would have to re-texture the pillbox for every possible environment for mappers to make them really camouflaged. Blue will fit no matter what because that's the colour of the base it should be in. There is a reason why it's named not after RA1's Camo pillbox, you know!

damage scale? It means that every weapon a base damage, but the damage scale on that armour type contains a multiplier to decide how much damage each weapon does in the end. Let's take the mine damage scale, and let's make the repairgun hit a mine. usually it would deal -1 (it heals) damage, but if hitting armour with the Mine damage scale, that number would be multiplied with -1 ---> final damage dealt is -1 * -1 = 1. for every other weapon it has a multiplier of 0, therefore if i hit armour with the mine damage scale with a personal ion cannon, the final damage dealt would be 200 * 0 = 0. Does that help?
-
Lol! Wasn't that going to become the alt-fire for repairguns at a certain point, firing for 20 seconds, but it was bugged and it got deleted... Sounds like people found an alternative ^^

Under... is indeed not balanced when it comes to sneaking. However, the amount of routes into the enemy base has barely changed since the original, in fact, it even was worse back in the day to certain extent. This is how sneaking as GDI should go: 2:18 - 2:35 is relevant hereI am now forced to trigger the obelisk not once, but three times, while standing blatantly in the open, ready to get shot. It's really difficult, but the reward for succeeding is indeed very high. Mines would make my work even more difficult, combined with the fact that they are not only harder to trigger behind a wall, but also deal more damage than in the original. But don't forget, GDI has been given another route to sneak in the enemy base, that's to the Airstrip, so that kind of counters the mining issue. If you think Nod would be in a bad position in Renegade X, look at how they were doing in the original: 10:58 - 11:19That's right, sneaking as Nod in the original was... impossible. But, i was still able to take out many buildings as Nod in a solo mission, that was by sneaking in with a Stealth tank. I don't have video footage of that, but it consisted of waiting like 10 minutes in the tiberium field until the GDI base was pretty much empty. I would drive in their base, taking fire but parking at the AGT, repairing my Stank to full, then driving to the WF, C4ing it and blast the Refinery with my vehicle. However, because of the next issue...: 6:36 - 6:54The blind spot on advanced base defences have been made so small, I would have faced the risk of getting shot, even when parking my vehicle right next to the AGT/obby. The only point that stands is harvy walking, but i don't have enough experience of that in RenX to say that's still a viable option. My final suggestion: Bring back the wall covering the right entrance of the Nod Power Plant, and increase the blind spot on advanced base defences.

Higher splash damage is justified because infantry can now sprint, they're a bit more difficult to hit + nearly no damage is carried through materials anymore. Lowering splash damage would cause more issues than it would fix. And yeah, making vehicles more expensive with every purchase works. Combine it with other penalties however, and it would get too harsh. So, instead of decreasing splash damage or removing vehicles altogether, make shells carry a bit more damage through material and make them more expensive with every purchase, as suggested above.

I don't mind Mesa II being the least favourite map out there, and I don't care if what you said is a joke or not. I can take a lot of jokes. But that's irrelevant here. Listen. You have been promoted to the position of an official developer, which is awesome and completely deserved! Off course that allows you to make jokes, make funny intro's, but! As an official developer, you are representing the Totem Arts team, and with that comes responsibilities. You can have fun no problem, that's part of the job! But think about it, an official just bashed his own content, in this case it's rather small but if a journalist reads it, he's going to notice, report and the community is going to feel it because if a handful of new people will no longer try out the game because they read a twisted article based on a single comment. Or not, but show some rrsponsibility and some respect. You might have read some RockPaperShotgun articles back in the day, by the way, to see that it's not all entirely positive. As an official, i just want you to take certain responsibilites. And you are! But you've also shown to act out in quite a nasty way, which i would have laughed about if you were not an official. Just show that you care and that you can, allright, even if i'm the only one to complain about it. Because what i just said did make sense, at least to me it did.

RypeL, you know what you need? A good tap on your shoulder, to be reminded of how awesome you are and how awesome you've been. Don't be so negative! people really appreciate what you're doing here!

No offense on what i'm going to say next, allright. I just want to make an impression. According to the quote above you said that Mesa II had a tendancy to crash the game, which is correct and should be avoided. My direct response to the announcement that it will be fixed (not removed from the rotation!) in the next patch is: This part was pretty positive, right? That part had absolutely no sarcasm intended. Remember, Mesa II is not disappearing, okay! So, what's your detailed, well-defined opinion on Mesa? Bad? Perfectly fine with me. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion! However i'm of the opinion that if people can't provide any sort of detail to their opinion, good or bad, they should be shown one from a neutral perspective so they can learn something from it. Maybe yours is perfectly detailed but you haven't shown it yet. But for now, you haven't, so please read my following quote from another topic: Now, I'm not implying that all maps are automatically good. This is not a magical world where everything is perfect, that's why i'm a beta tester and that's why i'm making this post. Take a look at what i said immediately after: I don't think Mesa II is an amazing map for me as i'm making it look right now. Some maps only work for me when i'm in the mood for them. I acknowledge this. But... please tell me what of your following comment still stands: Please tell me, no sarcasm intended! If there is something i said that is genuinely incorrect, I would love to hear about it so i can learn from it next time. I hope you learned something from this. including you, yosh. Now please call me Spoony for being a circlejerk.

Hmm... I don't know. It indeed sounds reasonable to make such upgrades so expensive, but i've always been that guy that likes to know what he's up against when seeing an enemy, so i would not natually like this change. But, maybe that's just me being stubborn, adding an icon to every vehicle showing what updates he has would solve that issue. Or simply looking at your health bar when you'll get shot and see how much health you lose. If i'm going to let my old arguments go as to why i wouldn't like it, I'll instead try to design upgrades that rebalance the characteristics of a vehicle instead. If you want to upgrade damage specifially, I would suggest the ability to load extra shells on your vehicle for an extra cost at a (capturable) Repair Facility. These would cost 50 credits each and therefore would have to be wisely used, as you could just as well buy another Medium Tank with 16 shells. AP rounds, free of cost on "---" Tanks as they already use them. This one is pretty self-explanatory. HE rounds, free of cost on Artillery (MRLS use missiles and therefore cannot buy shells) Have great splash damage, deal more damage on armoured targets (somehow, let's keep the current game mechanics alive unless we're firing HEAT here) but fire slow and therefore have an arc. Smaller caliber rounds could be installed on other vehicles that deal more damage on vehicles, but less on buildings (or not). Shrapnel shells are unique in the way that they are mostly obsolete in modern warfare but not in Renegade X because LOGIC! Using those would basically mean loading a enormous shotgun on your vehicle, that should make it clear enough. So... any ideas? TL;DR: Add diffrent shell types to the game for vehicles and make them cost a substantial amount on (capturable) Repair Facilities!

Great job on this one, but have you really stooped to the level that an official has to bash another official's work on an official forum thread that many people read? Grow a pair, please. *sarcastic thumbs up* Awesome! Could i ask though, who exactly worked on this change? I recall multiple people working on this.

I absolutely love Frank Klepacki's works. In fact, i love his works so much that whenever i see a game is being released which he worked on, I automatically consider buying it.They're simply that good. However, i don't have much knowledge of any of the C&C games after Westwood's collapse (just for convenience i'm going to add Generals here), So i can't tell much about those, hell, I'm not even sure if he worked on any of the newer C&C games. I've played C&C so much back in the day, I can memorize and 'sing' every song from the back of my head (up to Renegade), let me hear the first few notes and i'll do the rest for you! I even made my own lyrics for Just Do It Up and sang it as a school project! I'm never going to do that again though. About the progression of the music style over the years... Yes, you're correct, But i really don't mind guitar solo's and stuff as long as it's done right. But... I'm not a big fan of Chicajo's work on Renegade X' soundtrack to be honest. He always feels it's necessary to take an existing formula amd change it to it's own, even if it doesn't fit with the genre. He's done it to Renegade X , and he's done it to System Shock.

As someone from the Netherlands: can confirm, lots of Dutchies have beards. Since i've went to college, yes i've noticed, hahaha! But it wasn't just the beard... Everything just fit, even though last time i saw that guy was several months ago. But who cares
-
Ahhh, i get it now! And nope, you're not the guy because you aren't even studying at the same school as me. Funny to know that someone from this close is on the same, quiet but cosy forum as me. He even makes mutators! Have a good one!
