  1. You're quite mistaken. There is no concern trolling on my part. I'm not attempting to silence disagreement over the boink by pointing out that action has been taken previously. There's a difference between disagreeing that "boink" is misplaced or that it's an essential part of the Renegade experience, and being openly aggressive, hostile, or mocking to anyone who doesn't share your opinion. This goes for both sides of the aisle: lukeman3000's post that SFJake just quoted wasn't very high brow, either. It's quite possible to have this discussion without being a dick about it: just look at the exchange between iovandrake and me.
  2. Frankly, it wasn't obnoxious at all compared to DoMiNaNt_HuNtEr's post. There's no weasel wording involved in calling attention to the fact that Kil had taken care of someone else who crossed the line and removed all references and responses to his post. But, I wasn't interested in making a huge post about it or to go into detail (again) how the behavior of you vets can prevent Renegade X from really gaining any traction in modern gaming, since if the mods come by to clean house again, it would be moot to put a lot of effort into saying so. Though, I will say that it's interesting that after Kil made the admonishment to not judge the community based on one person, a number of you continued to indulge in the same poor behavior.
  3. Actually, it's not moot. You see, the idiom "just sayin'" is a method of signifying to other people that a statement made was not intended to offend, annoy, or provoke or further fuel an ongoing quarrel, but instead was merely observations or personal opinions in which one has no interest fighting over in an argument. Usage of this phrase dates back as early as the mid-19th century. /The more you know WHY?! It's a fucking sound people need to get over their first world problems sometimes. Pandering to these fools is going to ruin the game next thing you know infantry could possibly get killed easily like in cod just because it's not like new games. Slippery slope fallacy, much? We are talking about something from the original Renegade that Westwood didn't even intend to put in, not a crucial element of gameplay.
  4. Heh. Maybe someday ... if you guys ever do update the installer for Beyond Black Dawn, I'll be waiting to try it out.
  5. I still say that in a GDI vs. GDI scenario, the Other GDI should be Nod posing as GDI. Maybe have crudely stenciled Nod logos over the GDI symbols, the base classes wearing Nod uniforms under their GDI equipment. Black Hand operatives wearing Dead-6 gear rather than the Dead-6 members, etc.
  6. You have to admit though, it's fitting that the guy who has the top standing has "Havoc" in his name.
  7. Cuing inane trolling for trying to be polite and civil, eh? Kil cleaned this topic up once already, DoMiNaNt_HuNtEr. Just sayin'.
  8. Thank you for choosing to keep this intelligent and civil. I was wondering why you chose to lash out at me with that snarky "game with points" post in the first place, honestly. That was entirely unnecessary of you. The problem is that you and some of the other Renegade vets in this thread are making the assumption that anyone who says they don't like the boink (or in my case, someone who never said whether they like or dislike the boink but supported the idea of making it optional) must want a hyper-realistic war game (which, by the way, Call of Duty isn't. If you want realism, the ARMA series is the shooter to play). More to the point, you erroneously equate the sliding scale of seriousness and silliness with thematic coherency. It's not a question of how realistic or cartoony the game is as much as it is whether or not it keeps an internal consistency. Playing a game set in Tiberian Dawn, which is a fairly dark very-near-future sci-fi setting, people who are playing Renegade for the first time aren't going to expect a cartoony "boink" as a kill confirm noise. Likewise, it would be jarring for a lot of people if they were to play the next Mario game only to see Koopas spurting blood and gore when Mario stomps on them. Intentionally juxtaposing silliness and seriousness is another thing entirely, and there are plenty of titles out there that play that angle and do it well, like the webcomic Erfworld. But as I understand it, the "boink" in Renegade's case was not Westwood's intention. They only left it in because people grew to like it. However, the developers are trying to bring in a lot of new blood to the Renegade community with Renegade X, or at least that's the feeling I've gotten from all the announcement videos. You're going to have people who aren't going to accept that the "boink" is a necessary part of the Renegade experience. And if the devs want to accommodate them by providing the option to change the sound, then you should respect that.
  9. Just for you, I think the devs should replace all explosions, blood, and gore with party balloons, presents, and rubber ducks. After all, it's just cartoony stuff, it shouldn't break the atmosphere for you in a game with ponts, right?

    Airstrike

Some advice, Unit. When snarkily "fixing" someone else's post to make it align with your opinion, don't dump a long-winded rant into it. Your rant is hyperbole to the extreme as it is.
  11. So it's the UDK itself that does that? Man, that sucks.
  12. Alrighty. I just finished downloading and unRARing it, but it looks like I still won't be able to play it. I get an error message telling me that I need to have Service Pack 3 installed to run the installer. XP64 never got a Service Pack 3. That's an XP32 thing. This error didn't happen when installing Renegade X's multiplayer, so I assume the devs corrected the issue when working on that.
  13. Serious question here: What were the dev team's goals for Renegade X? Were they hoping to draw in a bigger crowd than just the old vets? Show the world there's still a place for PC gaming in an industry smitten with mobile apps? (EDIT: For posterity the above was in response to something Kil cleaned up, disregard.) More options is always good. I do admit the "boink" is distinctive, but it would be nice to have something more thematic available.

    Music

Dude, I would totally ask Frank if he could lend his mad skillz for a Renegade soundtrack. There is, however, an official soundtrack, which I found while looking at ModDB after being pointed that way in an earlier thread: http://www.moddb.com/games/renegade-x/d ... gade-x-ost As it stands, though, when I play I actually make a point of putting on music from Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun, Renegade, and remixes thereof (including the Renegade-X soundtrack). I've actually wondered if the devs had certain songs in mind when they were designing maps. Tiberian Dawn's Rain in the Night, for example, goes really well with Mesa. When playing Walls, I usually put on Pharoteknical or one of the remixes thereof. And on Whiteout, I listen to March to Doom.
  15. While that is technically true, Unit, the Black Hand aren't Nod's rank and file, either. So units like the Stealth Black Hand, Black Hand Sniper, and Laser Chaingunner being limited to one at a time is still plausible. Especially since we're talking about soldiers using technology which, in Renegade's campaign, is supposed to be bleeding-edge. The voting idea was just one of three (four) ideas I had to stop griefers from hogging characters and ruining things for everyone else. As things currently stand in Renegade X, the voting system rarely ever accomplishes anything. I've never seen it successfully used to remove someone believed to be hacking or aimbotting.
  16. The question on my mind is, would EA tolerate Renegade X getting ported to a console?
  17. Tank Orgy 3/15 never forget! (I was there for this madness )
  18. Okay ... a few years ago, back in 2012ish I think, there was a lot of fanfare about the release of this single player campaign. I wanted to play it at the time, but I found that the installer refused to run under XP64. (Thankfully this hasn't been a problem with Renegade X's Open Beta.) Now that the multiplayer open beta is here, I've been poking around and I can't seem to find anything on Beyond Black Dawn, anywhere, aside from the sneak preview trailers. What happened to it? Did it ever get released in full, is the demo still available?
  19. I still need to play Kane's Wrath, personally. I kind of wish EA called CnC3 "Tiberian Twilight" instead of that hot mess that CnC4 turned out to be. CnC4 just ... I don't know, it seemed completely disconnected from everything. Of course, I feel the same about the Red Alert universe and all the attempts to combine it with the Tiberian one. I could go on a rant about that for pages.
  20. Yeah. I really don't see why something like this can't or shouldn't be done eventually. Just look at TF2 and some of the really fun game modes people came up with: Pyro Dodgeball, TF2Ware, Prop Hunt, etc.
  21. The base classes, or the advanced characters? I think both would be just fine as they are in a Highlander mode, actually. Right now, one person who's really good at playing one of the advanced characters can carry their team.

    Hackers.

Just a question, guys: I've run into situations where my character suddenly dies and the death message says I committed suicide; the kill icon is just a skull and crossbones. Most recently this happened while a group of Engineers (including myself) were trying to disarm a beacon. It happened to me and several other engies. What's going on here? Is this a bug, someone hacking?
  23. I could get behind this; there's enough basis for it in Command and Conquer's setting. Nod is the faction most susceptible to infighting, as you have to deal Hassan's forces in Tiberian Sun, and Killian's in Tiberian Wars. Seth from Tiberian Dawn, that could have easily turned into a Nod vs. Nod situation if Kane didn't nip that problem in the bud. GDI vs. GDI could be explained by Nod using stolen GDI materiel; in fact I think this actually happens in the very mission where Kane deals with Seth's ambitions back in Tiberian Dawn.
  24. I like this idea; you oughta suggest it over at the Game Design subforum.
