Regular soldiers

Nothing about handling those weapons is difficult and yes they're enough to drop soldiers that aren't careful. They don't actually do that much damage, no, but if you're predictable in your movement or standing still you're going to die quickly.

With the basic rifle there's basically no reason to not aim for the head, and its not that difficult to hit it every now and then. If you start going in a direction and be predictable, you can drop in like 1 second even with the more expensive character type, but thats entirely your fault.

The spread benefits people with bad aim. Where in renegade, you actually had to have your crosshair on the enemy to land a hit, in Ren X, the spread provides a degree of luck where you may not necessarily be aiming directly at the enemy but the spread will determine that a round will go slightly to the left or right of the crosshair which may actually hit the enemy.

Similarly with recoil, you can aim at the neck/upper chest area and let recoil provide the headshots instead of having to actually aim at the head.

You have to keep your crosshair somewhere, regardless of where, and that means you need to compensate for the recoil and keep aiming manually. You don't actually have to aim for the head? You have to control your gun in the proper place, regardless of any weird excuse you make for it. There's no luck or noob-help in recoil like this game has, assuming its not both ridiculous & random.

Spread is a different story, it can definitely be luck based if yuo keep the trigger too long at a time, since its entirely random. Letting go a bit is a choice, but its also a potential lost of damage.

I'm personally against all the overtime "spread" effect in the game. Doesn't fit the game at all and at best makes some gun a bit weaker and random than they should be, for no particular reason.

Well you do what you do and I'll keep getting easy headshots. Win win.

It is so nice to hear someone with the same point of view as myself. It was a sad day for me when they choose to implement it on my beloved standard soldier in the closed beta. :(

Spread also helps people with high pings survive longer. Aiming from the hip in a fire fight when lagging is a great way to contribute if your lag compensation skills aren't up to snuff. (Effectiveness of your work not up for discussion, though. :P)

That is the worst excuse ever for having spread.

Bad ping should not be awarded in any way or compensated for.

I didn't say it was a reason to have it, I'm saying it's a convenient side effect for some people. It's not like it's a reward. It just means you can kinda hit dudes and assist your team in any small way possible.

(Also that's a nice middle finger to me. :P There's not exactly an Australian server I can join most of the time)

It was not aimed at you personal, i just think it is a very bad idea to have a game based on PVP where the game mechanics compensate by lowering the bar of the gameplay on the majority of players to help the minority.

I dont know how bad or good the Australian connections is, but i played from EU to US plenty of times in a broad collection of games and i never really had that bad ping(Unless i was downloading a shitload of porn :P ).

My point is that most of times when i have seen people with bad ping it has been because they have not been bothered to get a decent connection, and by decent i mean stable.

I remember running the old renegade on a 128k/bit down - 64k/bit up and i had no lag unless i joined a chineese server or some shit.

Back then ping up to 200ms were ok and 70ms were totally awesome.

Nowaday you can easy get 14-20ms latency to "local servers" (EU to EU), and less than 100ms over seas(EU to US).

So it cant imagine it is that bad from Australia either, unless there is some other factors playing in.

Australia to Europe is about 450-500 (From Western Australia) and USA can be anything from 250+. It's an ever present hurdle for me to play games I like since games die quickly in Aus. i even made a topic thanking the devs for Skirmish so I can still enjoy Renegade X! :D I can very much understand your point, though. I agree that spread should never be there to make it easier. But with the amount of spread in Renegade X I think it's fine. It's not so bad that it makes it better to aim from the hip or anything, but it's just enough to help with lag compensation. And I'm sure it wasn't that way by design, just a happy accident. If a game ever did it on purpose though, there'd be questions asked for sure. :)

It's basically the issue of me being in the Southern Hemisphere and everything else that's cool... not being in there. :P You can still totally play with high ping. Most people in my opinion have learnt to play with lag and play somewhat okay despite our horrendous handicap. That's why I say spread is good. I will aim down the sights for long range but at close range that spread is the only thing that would keep me alive when my opponent has ping advantage.

The main factor playing in for Australian lag is the huge distance and the quality of Australias internet. (We're ranked in the lowest in the world in terms of quality.)

Dude, headshots with sights. That is why you die. They keep snapping back and forth from sight mode and standard. If they kept holding down sights they'd be easy target for you, but they are using everything to their advantage as they keep moving, aim down sight for a bit, keep strafing, keep jumping, keep tracking your head.

Course the ramjet owns these fuckers any time one shot anywhere.

I honestly don't even notice the recoil/spread... I use the standard soldier the same way I used it in Renegade and it works perfectly fine. Keep moving and aim for the head.

You just need to be adaptive. Play from angles that the spread and recoil are mitigated by your position. Eventually, you forget they are even there.

I think recoil makes the weapon less boring since you aren't just holding the button down, but you're also having to compensate for the recoil. It really puts the weapon's intended range into perspective.

It actually really doesn't add anything at all, since this game has a lot of movement and constantly makes you change your aim anyway. Recoil & spread are terrible mechanics for shallow games that don't have anything else to make the gameplay interesting.

Jake I don't see why the basic soldier's gun is bad because of recoil. To me, the whole aim down sight things, the physics of this engine, the motions your characters and their tanks do - it all seems fine. I dig it, I play it, I like it.

The only thing I hate about his game right now is the tank lag - the crazy, ridiculous tank lag. Plz fix that, so we can have max server count again! Max server count equals epic meal time.

FUCK YOUR STUPID LITTLE "INTIMATE" gameplay encounters 12 vs 12 snore fests. We want 32 vs 32 edge of your seat action that needs more cocaine so you can KEEP DRINKING AT THIS CLEARLY HUGE DRINKING GAME. THIS IS A DRINKING GAME CAUSE THERE ARE ALOT OF BACK AND FORTH SHENANIGANS THAT many must endure, especially marathons. THAT is a war, not some gay ass little battle. FULL ON CHAOS - GET REAL OR FUCK OFF. Sorry, too much Peyote. My point still stands though!

And the funny thing is that people usually use the excuse that it makes the game more realistic! HAHAHAHA

Clearly they have never had a gun in their hands.

Guns that spread out over time can be worked around. After about 10 - 15 bullets stop shooting then start again really fast. It removes all the spread. I hope it atleast stays that way. This game is a skill based shooter, it should not have any spread on any gun even the shotgun should NOT be random.

Renegade also had spread on weapons like the Auto Rifle and recoil on at least vehicles (as part of the vehicle physics).

The Arty's projectile was very inaccurate over long range too.
