Rant Feedback: How I Feel ...

---Fair Warning: Rant Enclosed---

Hello Totem Arts Devs and Renegade Fans alike! :D

To be honest, I'm unsure of how I really should feel like about Renegade X at this moment. However, I kind of have this gut emotion to both give heart-warming thanks and to give each Dev at Totem Arts one punch for all their hard work & efforts. Here is why, well- sort-of ...

As a fan of C&C overall from its heydays w/Westwood Studios. It's truly obvious to me that a lot of love, sweat, tears, determination, and much- much more have been poured into making this fantastic game and bringing it to life. I cannot think of any better month (than February respectively) to celebrate the love of it's predecessor; C&C Renegade to show its fans they are indeed very much loved and respected with the release of RenX. While, I don't completely know what the entire behind the scenes story is. It's safe to assume a ventured guess that. A rather large figure of money has been thrown at this, to make it even possible to create Renegade X. Not even to mention the things EA may have 'asked' them to do- as part of licensing deals. (shivers at that thought ... moves onward.)

But wait- I've missed something ... the amazing developers at at Totem Arts are now making REN-X as just a plain 'free' to download title on Feb. 26th 2014!? So there is no F2P model? and no standard entry MSRP price to pay up?

Huh-.

Well, I definitely gotta say that takes some real guts to make a decision like that (especially w/a game franchise like this), I haven't a clue as to why they have decided to go "free" but hey as a C&C REN' fan- I'm more than happy to download it. Then give it a try and play it for what it is worth.

Knowing that, I'm excited for the full release of the game but unhappy that I am unable to pay Totem Arts for this potential one-of-a-kind masterpiece and hard work. Cause here is how I originally saw things (wishlist wise) way before Totem Arts did anything w/Renegade's Universe:

-I wanted a game that was set C&C Renegade Universe and properly licensed.

-I was even willing to commit to create 'sed' game at one point...

-If someone else did it, please for the love of all C&C ... no EA devs or EA pub pressure.

(which means no 1st or 2nd party EA Involvement/peer pressure)

- Create a New Engine (made for the new CNCR): Basically I too had wanted to improve on the existing formula that Westwood Studios left behind for Renegade and add/create modern elements that fit Renegade. (i.e. to creatively & freshly update the game's formula so it doesn't feel too stale)

... and that was all I wanted. So I'm both a happy and unhappy camper just because its "free" but it is understandable, it would likely have been too far difficult to try to make money off of this due to its modded origins using the Unreal3 Engine as a type of shortcut.

Undoubtedly this is okay but it is still dated to be using such old PC engines like UN3 (UN4 is out) for a modern PC title, I know- Totem Arts hasn't likely been making it completely out of UN3 but still it seems to be the majority. Among other possible issues. Such as legalities of the game or other reasons that may have hindered it's possible sales & distribution. I wont pretend to know or not know what was the cause of this going free. However, I better not get some crazy in-game advert system and I would hope that RenX does well enough for itself.

In the end. No matter what, I shall admit that I am a fan of Renegade's Universe and if you are to; then as fans of this we owe it to spread the word about RenX. We owe it as fans to support it, to show that there is interest in a whole series of C&C Ren games in the future (flop or not, although I hope for not). This is one of the only better ways I think would catch EA's or another would be candidates attention, if enough of us said "we want this!" and mean it through playing RenX. It could happen!

**I hope you enjoyed the rant ... I'm off to countdown the days to DL.

(**Feel free to comment and discuss how you feel about RenX and Renegade future wise)

Special Thanks: Totem Arts! For caring enough to create such a terrific game! (and for patiently working w/fans)

;) See you on RenX! "hah-hah-hah! I got a present for ya!" ... (*BooM! Message-Terminated ...)

Uh...ok. I cant tell if youre praising it or hating on it, nor why on either point. Here I was expecting another heated debate...

RenX is a rare gem, one of those nostalgic call-backs that actually handled it well and was done by some badass dudes. It is free, and will remain that way forever, so no worries (no adverts). The devs have happily made this game knowing full well it would make them absolutely no money and could never be used by anybody else to make money.

As for the existence of call-back games like this, Im always happy when they pop up, but Im not torn apart when the vast majority of them dont (Beyond Good and Evil, why hath you forsaken me?!). Sometimes, you just got to know when to let something die in peace... *cough* Monkey Island *cough*

Just look at the FAQ, the last trailer and lots of threads. It would have saved you the time of the rant. They cannot make money because of a contract with EA. Simple as that. No advertising. No micro transactions, so no f2p but pay to win stuff. No buying or selling. No donations or anything else. The only thing that needs money is not related to the dev's and are servers. They need donations to keep running, which is probably not that much.

I may just picking up parts of it, but yeah...

1. EA never paid for this project that started off as a mod and is thus not a part of EA's projects pipeline. This small gem here is based solely upon the license of C&C and thus EA. Nothing more. (Except Renegade) The rest is made out of the tears, love and body parts of the devs, providers and testers. As far as I know this started at a point where EA was still kind of public-friendly and didn't really mind free CnC Projects.

2. Free. Yup, completely free. As in "Download it. Have a great ton of fun. Play it."

3. They needed to make it free. Otherwise it would be kind of a Copyrightinfringement. And honestly, I don't mind it as free project. It's a great piece of advertising for the devs themselves if they want to start something in the game industry.

4. And it's based upon the UDK because it's usable for free for free projects. It's nearly the same thing for the CryEngine. For non-commercial projects it's usable for free.

5. As explained before... It's kind of different for the UDK. As far as I know there aren't any plans for UE4 as they had made with the UE3 and the UDK.

6. Shouldn't be. Except some self-advertising for Totem Arts ;)

That is so far my explanation. Hope you don't mind it.
