Need a suggestion on my next upgrade.

I am currently running:

-AMD64 3500+

-Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS

-1.5 GB Generic RAM

-Some cheapo motherboard

I was thinking of doing a big upgrade (for me at least) in september, getting a 650i motherboard, 2GB ram, and an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300. (keeping my video card for the time being untill I can save up enough again.)

My question is: Would I be farther ahead spending $500 getting that ^^^^ or, for $200-$400 buying an 8600 or an 8800?

I'd suggest shelling out the $500 for the new cpu, ram, and mobo because your computer is only as good as its foundation, if your cheapo mobo decides to short out your components, that new video card wouldn't mean much, and besides a new series of video cards are shelled out every 6 months. By the time you get enough money for a new video card you will be able to get a lot better one for the money.

And your rendering times will prolly get a bigger drop from the better cpu, than the new video card, not to mention the more it will take until you will have to use your page file from the boost in ram.

I was about to suggest the exact same thing. What, the E6600 is like.. $20 greater than the E6300, it isn't a big deal if your planning on spending that much. You might as well go with what will last you in the long run. Especially with doing things like working on this mod.

I;m on an extremely tight budget, so I have no choice but to stick with the 6300. I've found some items on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...p;rd=1&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...p;rd=1&rd=1

I'm hoping to get them all somewhere around the $200-$275 mark. Otherwise I'll keep scrounging around eBay till I find what I need at a price I can afford.

Edit: The 6600 is WAY more than $20 more than the 6300

Okay, I bought :

and

Now, I'm getting 2x1gb of DDR800 ram. Only thing I haven't bought or decided on is the video card. I am really torn between an 8800gts and an 8600gts, I know the 8800gts is much better, but I don't want to spend that much on a video card. Any advice would be great! smile.gif
